I'll keep the quiz open for entries until Jan. 6th. Although there have been some great entries so far, no-one has got 100% yet, so there's still time to win first prize.

The joint winners of the Yeltz Yule Quiz 2020 are Mark Wood and Richard Turley (again!). I wouldn’t expect them to share, so they win a bottle each. Answers are given below:

1. Who scored the first Yeltz goal of the current league season? Answer: Richard Gregory
2. What colour shirts did the Yeltz wear in their away victories at National League Maidenhead, Halifax and Barnet earlier this year? Answer: Anthracite
3. Name the only opposition team that Halesowen Town have not yet played since joining the Southern League Division One Central? Answer: Didcot Town
4. Who is the longest serving Yeltz first team squad member? Answer: Jamie Molyneux was the intended answer (but it’s Ahmed Ali if previous spells are included)
5. Vice Chairman Rod Brown formerly managed the now defunct Halesowen Harriers. In what year did Halesowen Town last play Halesowen Harriers in a competitive fixture (excluding friendlies)? Answer: 1996. Yeltz lost 1-0 away on 26/11/1996 in the Birmingham Senior Cup after drawing 1-1 at home on 12/11/1996. Previous games took place in the Staffs. Senior Cup in 1988 (won 2-1 at home) and 1993 (won 3-1 at home).
6. Who is the Halesowen Town Academy player who has recently signed for Halesowen Town’s first team? Answer: Joe Palmer
7. Why was 1483 a significant number in Halesowen’s epic FA Trophy run last season? Answer: It was the attendance for the games at both Halifax and Barnet.
8. Over which of the four sides of the Grove does the sun set during an August evening game? Answer: The Harry Rudge Stand
9. What sport used to be played on the land where the main car park within the Grove is now situated? Answer: Tennis - the tennis courts can be seen behind the Shed on the picture below:

10. What was manager Paul Smith’s normal position in his playing days? Answer: Central Defender (4)
11. How many miles did Ben and Richard complete in their circuits of the ground for the ‘regenerate the Grove’ fundraising efforts of May 2020? Answer: 126 miles
12. What will be the attendance at Halesowen Town’s next home league game? Answer: This is unlikely to be known for quite a while! However, it doesn’t affect the outcome as both MW and RT gave the same answer and were already more than one point ahead of the next entrant.

Two things. Question 5. I remember watching us play Harriers at their ground in the late 80's. Which competition was that?? Anyone?

And how fantastic to see the Grove surrounded by fields in question 9, pre roads, factories and housing. How old is that photo??

I remember going to that. Think it was a pre season friendly.

I certainly also remember hiking up to the Halesowen Harriers ground on more than one occasion though I can’t find any other competitive games in the records. I suspect Andy is right and we may be thinking about pre-season friendlies and I do recall one fairly warm Summer visit (although I think these friendlies may have been in the 1990s).

As for the tennis courts, the photo is obviously after the opening of the new grandstand (what we now know as the Shed) at the first game of the season on 21st August 1950. The tennis courts couldn’t have lasted much longer, so I doubt the photo can be any later than the mid-1950s.
