Best result of 2020 so far!

Definitely didn’t want any more Senior Cup games

Surprisingly gutted to lose.

But can't argue with overall feeling. We've got more important business to attend to.

Good performance tonight- lots of nice passing and fluidity. Yates looked lively, Molly’s goal was superbly taken, and the youth teamers gave a good account when coming on.

Technically this was a draw so can we hold on to our unbeaten run? Agree with other comments that the additional fixtures won’t have helped.

Everyone get recruiting for Saturday- it’s the big one!

Birmingham Senior Cup Second Round – Tuesday, 7th January 2020

Halesowen Town 1 Burton Albion 1 (Burton Albion won 4-2 on penalties)

Jamie Molyneux netted an early goal but League One Burton Albion went on to knock Halesowen out of the Birmingham Senior Cup following a penalty shoot-out.

The Brewers utilised first-teamers Ben Garratt, Reece Hutchinson, Joe Sbarra, Ethan Vale and Ben Hart but it was the Yeltz who started on the offensive to force a 2nd minute corner. MOLYNEUX then put Halesowen ahead in the 10th minute after he latched onto a long ball and lobbed neatly over goalkeeper Garratt into an empty net from the right.

Burton’s Hart was denied down the right in the 16th minute and a 28th minute effort from Chris Bradley was saved well by the legs of home goalkeeper Brendon Bunn. Just before the interval Ethan Vale screwed wide from the right and Vale struck a free-kick wide from the edge of the penalty area.

At the start of the second half Burton’s Tom Hewlett cut in from the left to fire just over the bar and home captain Andy Parsons made a good interception on the edge of his penalty area after 51 minutes. Jamie Ashmore then cut out Sbarra’s dangerous cross from the right after 57 minutes to concede a corner.

The Brewers equalised in the 79th minute when substitute Yewo NYIRENDA stabbed home at the back post to convert an excellent cross from fellow substitute Emmanuel Shittu. The Yeltz created several late chances with substitute Brad Ward striking the side-netting in the 82nd minute and the visitors clearing off the line from an 83rd minute corner. Substitute Montel Gibson then twisted and turned the Burton defence in the 89th minute but his final shot was saved by goalkeeper Garratt.

With the scores level at 90 minutes the game went straight to a penalty shoot-out to decide the winners. Halesowen’s first penalty by Rob Evans was saved by Garratt to his right whilst Sbarra netted Burton’s first spot-kick. Halesowen’s Luke Yates fired Halesowen’s second penalty high into the net but was matched as Hart was successful with Burton’s second penalty before both home substitute Emlyn Tudgay and Hutchinson then tucked home the third penalties. But with Garratt again diving to his right to keep out Josh Hawker’s effort, it was left for Nyirenda to score Burton’s fourth spot-kick and put his side into the next round 4-2 on penalties, with goalkeeper Bunn only able to push the ball into the roof of the net.

Halesowen Town: Brendon Bunn; Jamie Ashmore, James Bowen, Jordan Piggott, Andrew Parsons (c), Rob Evans, Joshua Hawker, Robbie Bunn (Bradleigh Ward 67), Jamie Molyneux (Montel Gibson 55), Luke Yates, Ashley Sammons (Emlyn Tudgay 78). Subs Not Used: Myles Simpson, Bradley Catlow (GK).

Burton Albion: Ben Garratt; Rueben Lal, Tom Armitage, Ben McLean, Reece Hutchinson, Joe Sbarra (c), Jack Holmes (Emmanuel Shittu 71), Ethan Vale (Luke Redfern 86), Chris Beardsley (Yewo Nyirenda 64), Ben Hart, Tom Hewlett. Subs Not Used: Charlie Williams, Nathan Smith.

Gave tonight a wide berth personally as ‘saving the pennies’ for the bigger game at the weekend and also the couple of league games we’ve got coming up.

I’d echo Josh’s comments about being gutted too as there is that much confidence in this side now you feel we can win every game and it’s disappointing when we don’t, such are the high standards we’ve set.

But the Birmingham Senior Cup is one competition for us too many at this stage of the season so we’re probably better off out of it now.

Let’s get the Grove rocking Saturday as it’s a massive one and arguably our cup final!
