Southern League Premier Central – Saturday, 1st February 2025
Halesowen Town 4 Bishop’s Stortford 0
An early Kieren Donnelly brace set Halesowen on course to thump Bishop’s Stortford and continue their impressive recent home form, writes DJ.
Immediately after the game, manager Russ Penn was keen to highlight a number of positives from the afternoon and summarised “we were excellent today, we started the game fast – when we play with full throttle DNA, we’re a match for anyone.” Noting Donnelly’s return to the scoresheet, Penn commented, “he’s a proper team player, he got his rewards today. If you keep working and doing the basics right, it comes around. We found a vulnerability in their back four and it worked for us today. We had so many clear chances.”
In early play, Donnelly headed over from Jak Hickman’s 5th minute cross. But DONNELLY soon put Halesowen ahead in the 8th minute when he smashed into the roof of the net from 15 yards following neat footwork to beat two defenders in an excellent individual goal.
Donnelly grabbed his second goal after 15 minutes after Bishop’s Stortford captain Jake Thompson lost the ball and DONNELLY nipped in to beat goalkeeper Eliot Krasniqi into the bottom corner for his 20th goal of the season.
After a couple of substitutions, the first chance for the visitors came when Louis Walsh hit across the penalty area for a 33rd minute corner.
Bishop’s Stortford were given a chance to get back into the game when Todd Parker clipped Ryan Charles in the penalty area for a 40th minute penalty. But home goalkeeper Platt dived to his right to save Walsh’s spot-kick low down. Just before the interval Donnelly was denied his hat-trick by Krasniqi’s excellent 40th minute save and Milan Butterfield rattled the crossbar from the well-worked corner.
There was more of the same after the interval as Halesowen maintained their all-time 100% record against Bishop’s Stortford. Conor Tee deceived goalkeeper Krasniqi after 47 minutes when his curling effort hit the top of the post with Donnelly just unable to convert the rebound. Platt then made a good 52nd minute save with Ryan Charles free on goal in a rare attempt from the visitors.
But it was Halesowen who continued to pile forward with two more goals and a host of other good chances. Solid defender Ryan WOLLACOTT’s 54th minute header made it 3-0 from Jak Hickman’s superb cross from the by-line. With more goals looking likely, Thompson made a great 57th minute tackle to deny Donnelly again and Butterfield’s 68th minute effort was cleared off the line from Tee’s corner.
The Yeltz made it an emphatic 4-0 after Wollacott laid off Tee’s cross for McKauley MANNING to strike a 68th minute deflected shot into the net.
Late on, goalkeeper Krasniqi denied both Donnelly and Tee again within two minutes when both players broke free on goal and Wollacott fired over the bar from Tee’s 76th minute free-kick. Tee then ran the length of the pitch only to see his 83rd minute curling effort saved by Krasniqi.
