Hope you all made it back from beyond the thunder dome in one piece. Last night was the reason I love this game. Some great football played again by us and our support for the lads was great. Can’t wait to see the two second half goals on the hilights

I want to see the highlights from our first two goals as I couldn’t see them at all. Just have to wait for our players to start celebrating to know we’ve scored 😂

Southern League Premier Central – Tuesday, 12th September 2023

Stourbr*dge 3 Halesowen Town 4

Unbeaten Halesowen moved up to second place in the table after a memorable victory in a scintillating seven goal thriller, writes DJ. The enthralling local derby also doubled up as the first leg of this season’s Brookes-Clark Shield.

Yeltz manager Paul Smith summed up the cracking game. “What a game of football from both sides, fully entertaining and we’ve come away with a deserved victory. We were nowhere near the levels we’ve set ourselves, but our extra bit of quality shone through.” Smith added “This one’s for the fans, a fantastic team effort. The referee was tremendous today.”

It was a fast and furious start to the resumption of league rivalries from five seasons ago as McKauley Manning’s 5th minute shot was turned away for a corner by home goalkeeper Charlie Price after Jack Holmes burst forward and laid the ball off. At the other end, Obinna Anaebonam was put through on goal, but Jak Hickman did splendidly well to track back and prevent his shot and, as the ball was recycled, Luke Benbow’s shot was deflected away. From the resulting corner, the Yeltz made a lightning break forward as Holmes played a brilliant ball to Manning who in turn set Miracle Okafor on goal to round goalkeeper Price only for his shot to be cleared off the line by Aaron Forde. Forde crashed against the post in the process and was substituted in the 12th minute. In another fine move of flowing football using both sides of the pitch, Price was forced to make a great 15th minute save after Manning cut inside.

The Yeltz took the lead when a 16th minute corner was helped on by Nathan Hayward and Kieren DONNELLY scrambled the ball home. But the lead lasted only two minutes after Yeltz goalkeeper Dan Platt failed to claim a deep free-kick and Reece KING’s header defied the efforts of the Yeltz defenders on the line to find the net. The equaliser prompted a long delay as the exuberance of the home support caused the collapse of a barrier fence close to the Yeltz dugout.

When the compelling contest restarted, Anaebonam’s 30th minute shot was turned away for a Glassboys’ corner and Jessy Bavanganga headed away Hayward’s cross for a 32nd minute Yeltz corner. Donnelly then flashed across goal five minutes later. The officials indicated a minimum of 14 minutes added first-half time, allowing for plenty of further action. Stourbr*dge’s Benbow struck a free-kick just wide from the edge of the area and Price couldn’t hold onto Manning’s shot with Okafor firing the loose ball over the bar as Halesowen went close again.

The Yeltz regained the lead in the 7th minute of first-half added time with Holmes again the creative provider with his skilful work providing for Hayward to fire against the Stourbr*dge post with HAYWARD on hand to be first to react and convert the rebound from an acute angle. With the clock approaching almost an hour of the first-half, a long range shot from Reece Mitchell was saved by Price.

After a brief quieter spell at the start of the second half, Okafor sent a neat ball into Donnelly’s path after 53 minutes, but Price was first to the ball. The Glassboys equalised for the second time when BENBOW smashed home to Platt’s left from the penalty spot in the 58th minute after Kieran Morris was penalised for handling from a left-wing corner kick.

The drama continued as Halesowen went ahead again for the third time at 3-2 with a great 65th minute goal as Holmes produced yet more fabulously tricky work down the right and his cross was met perfectly by OKAFOR who smashed a bullet shot into the net.

Halesowen scored another corker to make it 4-2 in the 71st minute when Manning’s flick set up man-of-the-match HOLMES to skip through the home defence before unleashing a rocket shot to beat Price from the edge of the area.

The Glassboys reduced the deficit to 4-3 when BENBOW scored his second goal directly from a 71st minute free-kick on the edge of the area by planting the ball into the top corner past the defensive wall and to Platt’s opposite side. As Stourbr*dge looked for an unlikely late leveller, Halesowen survived two 85th minute corners with the ball pinging around before Alex Prosser’s shot was kept out by Platt’s fine save and the ball struck the post from the second corner with the ball hacked clear by the visitors. A further 8 minutes of added second-half time meant a late finish, with Price making a good save from Halesowen substitute Caine Elliott before Prosser fired just wide on a Stourbr*dge break. The Yeltz played out the remaining minutes in the Stourbr*dge half with a degree of comfort at the end of a breathtaking local derby in a fine advertisement for Step 3 of non-league football.

Great game, fantastic result, fabulous support… what a great night out… everyone played a part in a great spectacle… couple of little mistakes , only added to the drama…. Thought jack was outstanding, and back to his best… some great football and outstanding goals.
Love to see passion, aggression and work rate and some lovely passages of football…. Just need to channel all that into every game, and don’t get involved in silly little off the ball incidents, which lead to bookings and possibly sendings off… as we need every player available for every game … well done to all.. fantastic result and night out…
