Decent game overall. I think they held the ball well and until the first water break, the game. Last 20 petered out to nothing. But... Rob Evans goal. Good lord.

Insall looks tenacious. Cant see loads of goals but he'll put pressure on.

Brookes-Clark Charity Shield 1st Leg – Saturday, 16th July 2022

Halesowen Town 2 Stourbr*dge 2

Halesowen retrieved an early two goal deficit to draw 2-2 and leave the competition finely poised in their attempt to retain the Brookes-Clark Charity Shield, writes DJ.

The Glassboys made a perfect start to the contest to take a two goal lead within the first four minutes. Lee Vaughan crossed from the right for Reece STYCHE to glance deftly beyond goalkeeper Dan Platt with just 55 seconds on the clock. Callum GITTINGS then robbed Nathan Hayward and smashed past Platt from 20 yards out to put Stourbr*dge 2-0 ahead in the 4th minute.

Halesowen’s first real attempt came when Jamie Insall’s cross was met by McKauley Manning’s header at the end of a fine flowing 19th minute move, but goalkeeper Charlie Price made a flying save.

Stourbr*dge’s Greg Mills came close to making it 3-0 when he strolled through the home defence only to see his 23rd minute low shot rebound off the base of the post.

The Yeltz improved markedly late in the first half and Brad Birch fired just past the post at the end of a neat 26th minute interchange of passes. Birch then blazed wide from Manning’s good 31st minute cross and Richard Gregory ballooned over the bar four minutes later.

Rob EVANS pulled a goal back for the Yeltz in the 41st minute with a superb 30 yard scorcher into the top corner after receiving the ball from a short free-kick. Shortly before the interval Nat Kelly headed Manning’s corner just over the bar.

Just after the half-time break Insall robbed Joel Kettle to earn a corner and in the 58th minute Birch threaded a great ball though to Insall, only for the striker to miskick in front of goal. For the Glassboys, Mills shot over the home bar in the 66th minute and Kettle steamed in to head just wide a minute later. Platt then did well to spread himself to save when substitute Chris Leybourne was put clear in the 78th minute.

But the Yeltz levelled the scores in the 87th minute ahead of Thursday’s second leg when central defender and captain Kieran MORRIS poked home from close range after the Stourbr*dge defence failed to clear a free-kick sent over from the left. Platt made another good late save from substitute Tyler Smith to keep the scores level at the end of a competitive game.
