Buildbase FA Trophy First Round Replay – Tuesday, 17th December 2019

Halesowen Town 2 Bradford Park Avenue 0

Clinical finishing from Simeon COBOURNE overcame Bradford (Park Avenue) and sent Halesowen Town through to a plum second round tie at home to National League Maidenhead United.

Liam Hughes planted an early 2nd minute header at home goalkeeper Brendon Bunn and Billy Priestley’s low 15th minute shot was deflected away for a corner. But there were few clear chances during the initial stages on the frosty surface and it wasn’t until the 33rd minute that Robbie Bunn fired high over the Bradford bar.

The Yeltz then went ahead in the 37th minute when Brendon Bunn raced out of goal and cleared up field to Montel Gibson, who cleverly slid the ball through for Simeon COBOURNE to finish well with his first time low shot beating goalkeeper Joe Green and finding the corner of the net. Just before the interval, Luke Yates advanced down the centre but the ball was turned away for a corner.

The Yeltz went on to take the game to their higher level visitors, constructing far more second-half chances. Captain Paul McCone put a 46th minute header past the post and Gibson mis-hit a shot at Green a minute later. Brendon Bunn did well to hold onto Keith Lowe’s 48th minute shot under the bar but it was the home ‘keeper who was busy again, making a great blocking save in the 52nd minute when Robbie Bunn played a great ball through to Cobourne.

COBOURNE grabbed his second goal to put Halesowen 2-0 ahead with a fabulous 59th minute finish after being put through on goal against Green and curling his effort around the stricken goalkeeper.

In further pressure, Gibson broke into the box to earn a 62nd minute corner and Gibson’s low 64th minute shot was hacked away for another corner. Green had to be alert to stop a 67th minute shot from Gibson with his legs and the tireless striker earned yet another corner when his 69th minute shot was turned away.

The Avenue created disappointingly few opportunities on goal although Brendon Bunn made a fine 75th minute save to claw the ball away from under the crossbar before there was a lengthy seven minute stoppage at the other end as Bradford goalkeeper Green was stretchered off after colliding with home substitute Jamie Molyneux. Veteran replacement Steve Dickinson took over between the sticks and he prevented any further goals with the ball looping away for a corner after Molyneux burst through the centre in stoppage time.

A game that had a bit of everything.

Was fairly even early doors and I thought they played the better stuff to begin with. Change of formation seemed to improve things for us and the balls in behind and down the channels paid dividends for both goals.

Few nice little bonuses second half with a fantastic headloss from their full back and a guy who may have been their bus driver going in goal for the last 10-15 mins.

Lastly, the atmosphere in the Shed End is better every game and you can only see attendances growing week-by-week with this level of entertainment. Roll on Saturday.

I'm lost for words to describe what I'm seeing, I really am.

Let's put this in context; we went away, and played on the worst pitch I've ever seen in 20 plus years of watching football, admittedly most of it league, against a team 2 divisions higher than us, and were the better team. Bradford fluked a draw. We then got them down the Grove, and battered them 2-0

Let's bear in mind, the fact we outplayed Gateshead the round before.

This is before we beat Grantham and Evesham - again, teams above our level.

I'm not denying the league is the priority, but God, I've missed a cup run. This really is a remarkable run. A run I'm genuinely proud of. How many times did we beat teams above us during the previous two management teams? I can't imagine it's many, if any at all.

Positivity wins, as I've always said. This squad is manged by a positive manager, a manager that is approachable, and a manager I'm proud to say 'he manages the club a love'.

I agree with all of this. I just hope the league backlog doesn't bite us back, as getting back up is the priority. Ideally we want to avoid the vagaries of the play offs as well.

The only point of order is that Evesham are not a level above us, but this is a remarkable cup run! The slight downside is that I got no points in the predictions as I thought it may have been a bridge too far, but I am glad I was wide of the mark.

Bloody hell, I thought Evesham were the league above us! Well, this now takes the shine off the cup run! ;D ;D

I know it's been said a thousand times before, but the job Paul Smith has done, in such a short space of time, is brilliant. The way he has got the players to gel amongst themselves, and the fans, is fantastic to be a part of and see. Little things like players celebrating goals and wins with the fans, just adds to the buzz around the club.

Paul Smith tweeted something last night, and ended it with #AllInItTogether - that's how I feel about the club right now.

I am aware of the tough challenge that we will face against Maidstone – but we’ll beat them. I’ve never felt so confident in a team before.

I actually have sod all to moan about! :o :o
