Birmingham Senior Cup First Round – Tuesday, 19th November 2019

Halesowen Town 5 Coventry United 0

Halesowen defeated Midland Football League Coventry United by striking five goals for the second consecutive game to set up a second round home tie against League One Burton Albion.

Joseph Cairns shot over the bar for the visitors in the 5th minute before Halesowen took control as Jamie MOLYNEUX capitalised on defensive indecision to put the Yeltz into an 11th minute lead. Montel Gibson then lashed across goal in the 14th minute and the Yeltz doubled the lead after 19 minutes when Gibson headed on Robbie Bunn’s corner for MOLYNEUX to volley home an excellent second goal. GIBSON burst down the right and smashed home Halesowen’s third goal after 25 minutes with a hard, low drive.

The Red & Greens never gave up and home goalkeeper Brendon Bunn saved Kyle Carey’s 20 yard shot after half an hour. But it was Halesowen who went closest to adding further goals before the interval as Lewis Ison cleared Gibson’s fierce 31st minute shot off the line and Molyneux ran clear down the left but fired a low 41st minute shot wide of the post. Molyneux was then denied his hat-trick again when he turned the last defenders only for Ison to clear off the line once more. Seconds before the interval, Josh Hawker’s shot was saved by Matteo Ninna.

After the interval Robbie BUNN made it 4-0 with a brilliant 57th minute strike directly into the net from a 22 yard free-kick. Visiting goalkeeper Ninna kept out Molyneux with a 60th minute fingertip save and Parsons headed a 73rd minute corner over the bar. Molyneux was denied yet again when through on goal by Ninna’s save but substitute Ash Sammons soon completed the scoring at 5-0 in the 74th minute after he waltzed through the Coventry defence to slam home from a tight angle. Ninna made another good save when he tipped Lewis Wright’s 82nd minute deflected shot over the bar.

I know football doesn't work like this - but that Gateshead result is interesting. We more than matched Alty, so the fact they've seemingly beat Gateshead well, bodes well.

I still expect a tough match.
