As many have said it was a more improved spirited performance yesterday. Seeing Asa back in the starting line up was a plus as seemed to settle the defence. But it’s all too little too late as we are effectively down now.

In truth Leiston were a poor side and were there for the taking really. A better team would have put 3 or 4 past them. Sadly despite our endeavour we lacked the quality and finishing touch to win the game which just sums up our league position as we don’t score goals.

Halesowen Town 0 Leiston 0

Halesowen battled strongly with plenty of effort but remain deep in relegation trouble after goals remained stubbornly elusive in another home stalemate.

An early Leiston cross was turned away by Jack Kelly as the visitors forced two 3rd minute corners. With the starting line-up already refreshed, Halesowen suffered an early blow and another formation change when Callam Mendez-Jones limped out of the game in the 5th minute, although his lively substitute Aaron Gilpin soon fired over the bar from the right after 10 minutes.

Home goalkeeper Dan Platt held onto a long range 19th minute effort from Joshua Cheetham and the best chance of the half fell for Leiston in the 35th minute when Joe Jefford found space at the back post to set up Noel Aitkens to flick goal-wards, only for Platt to make made a fine reaction save with his feet. There remained few further chances in an evenly matched first period, although Aaron Birch marked an impressive home debut by striking a 20 yard free-kick over the bar in first half injury time.

The second half started in scrappy style, punctuated by a series of yellow card offences for the visitors. But the Yeltz gradually grew in confidence to finish the game strongly by creating a series of match-winning opportunities.

Visiting goalkeeper Marcus Garnham denied Birch with a fine 58th minute save and Kelly could only blaze the rebound over the bar. Josh Craddock somehow planted a bullet header wide from Birch’s 73rd minute free-kick and Kieran Morris headed at Garnham from Birch’s 82nd minute free-kick. Craddock then fired into the side-netting in the 84th minute after substitute Gilpin burst forward before Platt pushed away Kyle Hammond’s 25 yard shot a minute later at the other end.

Alas, with the decisive cutting edge absent once again, the deserved goal did not follow for goal-shy Halesowen. In further late home pressure, Craddock placed past the post in the 88th minute and the vital touch was missing yet again when a goalmouth scramble ensued from Kelly’s corner deep in injury time, but the ball eventually fell agonisingly wide.
