5k?

Interesting line in an article put up by Phil Passey on the wonderful Yeltz Nostalgia Facebook group.

The line, "did not turn out to be a record gate" is contrary to what we always claim. The redoubtable Ben Bullock is on the case, having found another reference from immediately after the match estimating (?) the attendance at 4,500.

Anyone know any different?

I asked Harry Rudge about this many, many years ago, and he said it was a pure guess as in those days there were only two “openings” (I.e. no turnstiles) to get folk in and they were so inundated that they just took the money and said any old figure as a gate number. It is interesting that about the time we had that conversation we had just played Worcester on the bank Holiday we’re we had over 2000 and had to delay the kick off. Harry was adamant that in his opinion there were more at that game than Hendon
