Even more farcical is that North Leigh finished 21 points behind Bedford …. 21 bloody points 🤯
I'm with you John. Play offs are a joke.

I also think this new fangled "cross-bar" that we're forced to use is a modern innovation too far. What's wrong with string?
The game's gone!

;)
I'm the old duffer that shouts at clouds!!

Did they really used to use string as a cross bar?

Or have I fallen for some sort of joke?

Yes they did.

Re the goalposts Josh, tape or string was used in the early years of football as a crossbar. The first FA Cup final in 1872 used tape. It wasn't until 1882 that a fixed crossbar was mandatory. And it was 1892 that goal nets or 'pockets' as they were called were introduced. And that was probably the last time the governing bodies did anything sensible with the game. And before you ask if I was there, yes I was, looking for a cloud to shout at.😁

I think that penalties were introduced about 1890, but am I correct that the penalty “box’ was originally a D in a similar way to that used in hockey?

I think the penalty 'box' started off as a line across the whole pitch at 18 yards or so. But the six yard 'boxes' were D's. But not in the way you may think. A six yard D was made around BOTH posts, looking rather like a pair of breasts. A goal kick had to be taken from inside one of them. I kid you not!

So to all intent and purpose, a double D pair of breasts??

That reminded me of when i first started following Halesowen back in the early 80s. There was an old bloke who used to stand at the front of the shed who was never short of an "advisory" comment.

During one particularly poor match he shouted "football's never been the same since it's been in colour." It did raise a few smiles/laughs but I think most people knew what he meant

I always used to! Our larks and mad songs used to drive more people out of there though I suspect.😂
