Those of a certain age will no doubt recall the last meetings with Wisbech Town in the FA Vase semi-finals during the Spring of 1985 as Halesowen made a return to Wembley, becoming FA Vase winners for the first time.
2,702 fans watched Halesowen draw 1-1 in the semi-final first leg at Wisbech on 23rd March 1985 with John Woodhouse scoring for the Yeltz.
2,771 fans then packed the Grove to watch Halesowen draw 2-2 in the second leg on 30th March 1985 with Lee Joinson and Geoff Moss scoring.
With the FA Vase semi-final tied on aggregate at 3-3, a mid-week replay followed on 3rd April at Nuneaton Borough’s Manor Park with the Yeltz winning 2-1 through goals from Paul Joinson and John Woodhouse in front of 1,791 fans.
Further FA Vase heartbreak followed for Wisbech in the next 1985/86 season as they again reached semi-finals, this time losing to Southall, who were in turn beaten by the Yeltz at Wembley as Halesowen retained the FA Vase.
Since the last meetings, Wisbech have spent most of their time in the Eastern Counties League, with a brief spell in Southern League (Midland and Eastern Divisions) between 1997 and 2002. They joined the United Counties League in 2013 finally being promoted to the Northern Premier League structure in 2018, although having little time to truly establish themselves due to the two voided seasons.
Wisbech Town also reached the FA Cup 1st Round Proper in 1995/96, losing 5-1 at Kingstonian and repeated the feat the next season, losing 2-1 at home to St. Albans City. Wisbech went one better the following season of 1997/98, reaching the 2nd Round Proper of the FA Cup, losing 2-0 at home to Bristol Rovers.
