Entrance tunes used around the UK

Post by DJ » 29 Aug 2013, 21:32

From the last time I looked, below is a list of entrance tunes in use across the country. For teams like Everton and Plymouth Argyle, history dictates and soundtracks become embedded in the fabric of the club. For other sides, entrance music is a constantly changing force, a close-season debate where, on website polls, Pendulum vie with Wagner for the ultimate prize: to be played over a screeching PA system at 2.59pm every other Saturday. Please scroll to the bottom for some reasons behind the choices at various clubs....

Yeovil Town: "Pirates Of The Caribbean Theme Music" - Hans Zimmer (2003)

Arsenal: - A ticking clock
"It's a video montage showing magical moments in the club's history. As the intensity increases, a clock ticks down and the hairs on your neck stand on end. Then it's game on!"

Cardiff City - "I'll Be There" - The Stand (2010)
"The band features actor Jonny Owen from Shameless, Guto Pryce from Super Furry Animals, Owen Powell from Catatonia and Ryan Richards from Funeral For A Friend, plus myself and Jay Pepper from TigerTailz - an Eighties hair-metal band - on backing vocals. The song is from an old miner's chant, the oldest football chant in the world, I'm told." (Barrie McAuliffe, media manager, Cardiff City)

Carlisle United -"One Step Beyond" - Madness (UK No 7, 1979)
"We use a specially recorded version of 'One Step Beyond', with the introduction changed to say, 'Hey You! Don't watch that, watch this/Carlisle United at Brunton Park/One step beyond!'" (Lee Rooney, media assistant, Carlisle United)

Chelsea - "Liquidator" - Harry J All Stars (UK No 9, 1969)
"It's from the late Sixties, a favourite of many skinheads of the time. A lot of Shed End fans who are now in their forties and fifties can associate with the song."

Coventry City - "Be Somebody" - The Enemy (2009)
"The reason this track is used is not just because they are top local musicians and have gigged at the Ricoh, but the passion, speed and excitement of the song really seems to get everyone up for the game ahead." (Leighton Crossley, freelance audio producer, Coventry City)

Derby County - "Steve Bloomer's Watchin'" - Robert Lindsay And The Pride Park Posse (1997)
"'The track began in 1996 when Derby supporters Mark Tewson and Martyn Miller heard Aussie rules song 'Up The Cazaly'. Within days, the two had rewritten the lyrics, before musician Stephen Halsten-Reid revamped the composition. A more professional version was mixed, involving actor Robert Lindsay. The song has helped bring footballer Steve Bloomer back into the consciousness of fans. The player had a staggering scoring rate." (Faye Nixon, Marketing manager, Derby County)

Everton - "Theme From Z-Cars" - Johnny Keating (UK No 5, 1962)
"We've run out to this since the mid-Sixties. Apparently one of the Z-Cars cast, a big Evertonian, passed away and the theme tune was played as a tribute at the next home game - and it stuck." (Darren Griffiths, Media & Publications manager, Everton)

Leyton Orient - "Tijuana Taxi" - Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass (UK No 37, 1965]
"We've been using this track for 43 years. For its 40th anniversary, supporter Martin Strong wrote in the programme: 'In 1968, my dad took me to see the first home game of the season. As the Reds ran out, "Tijuana Taxi" sounded over the Tannoy. My dad laughed. 'What's this got to do with Orient or even football? I can't see them keeping this for long.'" (Leo Tyrie, press officer, Leyton Orient)

Middlesbrough - "The Power Game" - Cyril Stapleton (1965)
"The club's former theme tune is back. 'The Power Game', the music to a popular Sixties TV drama, was a clear winner in a poll via Boro's 900-strong web panel, proving far more popular than the Riverside's long-standing '…Pigbag' tune." (Dave Allan, Media & Communications manager, Middlesbrough)

Morecambe - "Gonna Fly Now" - Bill Conti (1977)
"You may know this from Rocky. We started using it last season following a request by captain Jim Bentley - Jim is now manager. Jim wanted something uplifting and was inspired by the Rocky story of overcoming adversity and punching above our weight." (Mark Swindlehurst, Matchday announcer, Morecambe)

Sheffield Wednesday -"Waterfront" - Simple Minds (UK No 13, 1983)
"It is difficult to get a great entrance tune now as the principle behind teams shaking hands has spoilt the build-up. We had 'Waterfront' in the early Nineties, because of the strong bassline. We dropped it, but reverted back in 2009 after demand from supporters." (James Hargreaves, Marketing manager, Sheffield Wednesday)

Southend United - "Club Foot" - Kasabian (UK No 21, 2005 [released 2004])
"Captain Craig Easton explained that many players felt this song helped with mental preparation. Many of our players like the band and, being honest, it is a great track, which has been enhanced by coverage from Sky." (Ben Duncan, liaison officer, Southend United)

Sunderland - "The Beginning Of The Twist" - The Futureheads (UK No 20, 2008)
"It's an uplifting and catchy song which is well recognised by supporters, many of whom are fans of the Futureheads. It works for me and the band have always been proud of their Mackem roots. It's much better to use a song associated with Sunderland than a dull tune like 'Beautiful Day' by U2, which it replaced." (Martyn McFadden, Editor, a-love-supreme.com)

Didn't know Villa used Craig Jones's "Escape" - coincidentally I used to blast this in my car before every Yeltz game last season..
