My simple calculation of a inch of rain on a 50m by 100m pitch says that 127m3 of water has to be disposed of. A simple sheet will not achieve this without added drainage piping to dispose of the waste water and a frame to support the sheet (its needs to be sloped to for the rain water to flow to the edge)

...if only problems were so easy to solve as a plastic sheet, I think it would be a common practice
any water soaking into the pitch we don't have to pay water rates 'run off' charge, if we divert the water into the mains drains then charges apply

but surely something as simple as a sheet when we expect heavy rain would be beneficial.

However there is potentially a financial penalty in the sense that if a Saturday game (or a Bank Holiday game such as the Chasetown fixture) is re-scheduled for a week night, then there is likely to be a lower crowd for the new date.
So there is a financial loss.

We probably wont get as many at Chasetown rearranged as new years day.

Market Drayton will still get a decent Yeltz following because we have some hardy away fans. But will not get the same as they would have done Saturday. Result lost gate, bar and refreshments income.

However, at our level these things have to be expected and accepted.

Local Cricket teams have covers in the air to protect the main strip with hoses running off into the outfield to disperse the water. Obviously too costly an option and technical for our level.

Noticed some premier clubs have a row of lights \ heaters at a low level on wheels to simulate sun light to make their grass grow. Again not suitable for our level.

As for Astro keep it where it belongs out of this world! Both matches at Sutton were crap for at least 70 mins each game either side.

Another financial loss (but only a minor one) is having to pay the officials a reduced fee for the postponed game; as a very sober AVFC pointed out on Saturday.

Can't we drain the water and save it for drought season when the pitch has been reseeded? ;)

We could keep the water and use them to fill balloons. Have a stash of water balloons in the shed in-case we ever get attacked by opposing playing staff?

Gloucester City did indeed have huge water tanks installed ,when they had their new ground built, for future use, but these could n't cope when the Severn burst its banks; with no insurance they were forced to ground share when the ground was submerged and have n't moved back to the City yet.
