Easy pickings?

Post by andy » 24 Apr 2018, 21:39

Saturday's final game opponents must be knackered. Poor old Stalybridge were due to play their SEVENTH game in TEN days tonight, and it's been postponed. I am led to believe it has got to be played tomorrow. Then they play Thursday as well! Finally they come bright eyed and bushy tailed to us on Saturday.

Others have still got to cram 3 games in as well yet. One thing that will not be missed next year will be a 24 team division.

What a farce. Just reading on the Stalybridge site that Workington had arrived with 12 players including some who looked as if they had bunked off school, and that they are now told they must travel again TOMMORROW AND to Coalville on Thursday :o

Times like these always bring to my mind the 1984/85 season when 67 matches were played in all competitions. Having played 10 times in April we then moved into playing in May on 2,4,6,8,13,15,16,18,20,21, 23 and finishing at home to Lye on 25th May.
Our line-ups on the successive nights of 20 & 21 against Tividale were:
CALDICOTT MOORE SHERWOOD WARNER RANDLE HEATH HAZLEWOOD SMITH D WESTON JOINSON P* JOINSON L PENN
CHILTON BRADLEY MOORE GUEST LACEY PENN WESTON* STAFFORD WOODHOUSE WHITEHEAD DUNKLEY* NOKES
The line-ups on 15 & 16, both away at Rushall & GKN, were
CALDICOTT PENN SHERWOOD WARNER RANDLE SMITH D HAZLEWOOD MOSS WOODHOUSE JOINSON P* JOINSON L* MOORE
CALDICOTT MOORE SHERWOOD LACEY RANDLE PENN HAZLEWOOD MOSS WESTON SMITH D* JOINSON L* WOODHOUSE

Travelling would have not have been so far but a very demanding schedule nonetheless

Does my memory serves me correctly in thinking we once played Redditch in a cup final, who were in the middle of a run of 9 games in 9 days?

1997/98, famously. We were their 7th opponent, on the final Thursday night of the season. They beat us 3-1.

They were featured on Sky during that run.
We beat them 3 1 in Bham Senior final

Why couldn't common sense pervail and in exceptional circumstances, some games be allowed to be re-arranged post saturday?

I realise that would hinder players potential holiday plans, increase expenses for another week and potentially coincide with play off dates, but come on, that fixture pile up is a farce.
