On a point of pedantry (what me, never), I believe that there has not been an England Team Manager since Terry Venables left amid a deluge of legal cases, since then the position has officially been that of England Chief Coach.

Regarding the new appointment, the disadvanage to Harry Rednapp is that at Spurs he is a success, whereas unless he can deliver a trophy at international level he will be ultimately judged a failure. As the biggest clubs are at best ambivelent about the success of the England team this will not help his case.

Postman Pat was generally felt at last World Cup to be exposed in terms of tournament football depite successful as a club manager and there is a world of difference between managing international players for a perid of week as for a normal fixture and having them away for 6-8 weeks as happens for a championship.

Who is the most eperienced tournament coach in the England set-up? Stuart Pearce - that makes him the best choice. However, the FA will be their usual imaginative selves and will go for the obvious option in Harry Rednapp - he will give in to his ego and accept the post.

'Arry may, or may not, be the best candidate overall, but the 'national mode' (What-ever that is) is for an English manager, which probably means Redknapp is the best option available. Further, the FA have made it clear that in making the appointment they will take into account public and press demands. Net result, it will be 'Arry who gets the job (assuming he wants it that is). Now, who was the last England manager appointed by publice and press demand? Kevin Keegan; and we all know how that turned out!
